Cannabidiol, or CBD, is a well-known cannabinoid found in marijuana plants.
All three types of cannabis produce CBD including Cannabis indica, Cannabis sativa, as well as Cannabis ruderalis. CBD, unlike tetrahydrocannabinol or THC, does not produce a psychoactive effect, so it does not get users high.
The United States regulates CBD differently from THC, but Canada does not. The Canadian government regulates CBD the same way it regulates THC, under the Cannabis Act.
So if you work in Canada for an employer that drug tests, you may find yourself asking, “Does CBD show up in a drug test the way THC does?” Find out the answer below.
Does CBD Show Up in a Drug Test?
The short answer is no, CBD should not appear on a standard drug test. The longer answer is that it depends on the products you use.
Many CBD products contain small amounts of THC. If you use enough products or the products contain more than 0.3% THC, it may show up on a drug test.
It’s important to understand how the different types of CBD and the type of drug test impact your risk of testing positive.
Types of CBD on the Market
Certain types of CBD products are more likely to have noticeable amounts of THC than others.
Hemp-Derived CBD
Anything made from a hemp plant should be safe. This is because hemp plants contain very little THC and cannot get you high.
CBD Isolate
A CBD isolate contains only CBD and no terpenes, flavonoids, or other cannabinoids like THC. These usually come from hemp plants as an oil, tincture, or crystalline powder to be eaten.
Broad-Spectrum CBD
Broad-spectrum CBD contains some of the other compounds found in cannabis including certain cannabinoids and terpenes. It does not contain any THC and most often comes as an oil to be eaten as well.
Full-Spectrum CBD
Full-spectrum CBD contains all of the compounds found in cannabis and may contain THC. It depends on the specific product and the plant used for extraction.
Hemp-derived full-spectrum CBD should contain no THC, but other strains could have THC.
Always check a product before using it to see if the manufacturer lists THC concentration and avoid products that do not have it listed. This may include edibles, oils, and tinctures as well as serums and topical creams.
How Long Does THC Stay in Your System?
THC can remain in your:
- Saliva for 72 hours
- Blood for a week
- Urine for 2-4 weeks
- Hair for up to 3-6 months
Keep this in mind when choosing a CBD product that may contain THC. If you know you get drug tested occasionally, only choose products guaranteed to have no THC.
